How do you recognize genuine crocodile?
Here's something few people know: you can actually tell the difference between crocodile, alligator, and caiman — just by counting the horns on the back of the head.
Genuine crocodile has 4+2 horns — these horns are cartilage, not bone, and are one of the biological traits that distinguish crocodile from alligator and caiman, which have a different number. Once you know this, you never look at exotic leather the same way again.
New Guinea Freshwater Crocodile — Crocodylus Novaeguineae
The Hornback belts from Bredal Wild are made from New Guinea freshwater crocodile (Crocodylus Novaeguineae) — a species known for its extraordinarily pronounced back scales. The leather comes from farming in Indonesia, under regulated and controlled conditions, and is imported with full CITES documentation and import permit. Everything is in order — from the jungle to your belt loop.
Hornback — the rarest cut. And the longest.
A crocodile's spine is narrow — and the middle section is the only one on the entire animal. That means each belt requires one whole animal, and that you can never get two identical belts. Not from the same animal. Not from anything else.
What truly sets Bredal Wild's Hornback belt apart from everything else on the market: the belt runs the full length from the horns down — one continuous piece of leather, without seams. This is one-piece construction of the central section of the back, and as far as we know we are the only ones in Europe offering this.
Italian manufacturers often join pieces together — that requires seams. Our belts have no seams. They are hand-glued with ecological adhesive — a technique that requires more time, more precision, and more respect for the material.
The pattern, scale size, and color variations naturally differ from animal to animal. That is not a flaw. It is the signature.

The Hornback belt is designed for the man who notices details — and knows that others do too. The horns naturally sit on the hip ridge when the belt is worn, creating a visual center of gravity that is unmistakable.
The lining is made of slightly heavier cowhide — deliberately chosen for greater durability and to give the Hornback leather the support it deserves. The result is a belt with substance — you feel it the moment you take it in your hands.

Buckle — handmade in Italy
Each buckle is handmade in brass from Italy. You can choose between two to three buckles yourself. The buckle is attached with studs, so you can easily change the buckle yourself — without tools. Want to upgrade to a silver buckle later? That's possible — for a fee.
Care and storage
Crocodile leather is matte and alive. To preserve the leather and build patina over time, all it takes is a light application of leather shoe cream twice a year.
- Brown and black: can handle colored cream matched to the color
- All other colors: always use neutral cream without silicone
Storage: The belt is delivered in a blue velvet pouch that shows the recommended way to roll it. Always roll from the tip — never from the buckle side. The belt also benefits from being hung like a tie when not in use.
