Bredal's Ostrich Leg Suede leather belts - what is the difference between suede and nubuck leather?

Our Ostrich Leg Suede belts are made from genuine ostrich leg skin from South Africa. This is a material that stands out clearly from the more common ostrich leather that comes from the top side of the bird, where the feathers were attached. The feathers are often used for brushes and decoration, while the hide from the top side is used in traditional ostrich products.
In this belt we use the ostrich leg, specifically the ankle area, which gives a characteristic and exclusive texture on the front of the belt. The belts are edge-stitched, and each belt is cut to the correct length specially for you.

What is suede?
Suede is a leather with a soft, velvety surface. It is made by using the flesh side of the hide, which is buffed to achieve a smooth and soft texture.
Characteristics:
• softer than nubuck
• more flexible
• has a more “fluffy” and open fiber structure
• not as durable as nubuck

Suede gives an elegant, relaxed and luxurious look — perfect for belts that should have a softer and more tactile finish.
What is nubuck?
Nubuck is made from the outer side of the hide, the side that would normally be exposed to weather and wear on the animal. This side is lightly sanded to achieve a matte, even and fine surface.

Characteristics:
• denser and firmer surface
• more durable than suede
• more long-lasting over time
• has a more refined and compact texture

Nubuck combines luxury with robustness, and is often used in products that must withstand more use.

Why we use Ostrich Leg Suede
Ostrich leg skin has a unique structure not found in other leathers. The ankle part gives a distinct pattern that makes each belt completely unique. When this is combined with the suede finish, you get a belt that:
• is exclusive and rare
• has a unique texture
• is edge-stitched for quality and durability
• is customized in length to order

This is a belt that stands out — in material, craftsmanship and appearance.
