Bredal has worked withexotic leather for 16 years as a designer and manufacturer.  Especially in belts and now also exotic sneakers. All leather arrives at the production site in El Paso, Texas, USA. Leather comes from Asia, Africa, and America.

Many leathers are already processed and tanned in the export country, while other types such as alligator are tanned either at American Tanning & Leather in Atlanta, USA, or locally at the factory in El Paso.

The tanning when it comes to leather belts is both chrome-tanned (the exotic leather), while  lining (inner leather) is ox or cow - vegetable tanned.  On the latter, you can print text and logo by moistening the spot where you want to print.

In the industry, there is a golden rule to print information about what type of leather it is, where it is produced, and also the logo.

Since it is possible to cheat with imprinting in leather that resembles exotic skin, the above is important for seriousness.   It can be difficult for the customer to see the difference between genuine exotic leather and cowhide.   Price production-wise is very different.

Some of the most famous fashion brands does not print information at all , there is just a paper note hanging on the hook indicating what kind of exotic leather it is.  Then you have to trust the manufacturer.

If the information is missing, it is difficult to determine where the leather comes from, whether it was made using legal methods, and whether it might involve child labor or come from factories with poor working conditions, etc.

The expertise in the various exclusive stores worldwide when it comes to exotic leathers  from wild animals or from farms / breeding is insufficient, whether it is in the USA, Dubai, or Puerto Banus. All reptiles as well as sharks must have a CITES certificate with their transport to another country.  CITES stands for Convention on International Trade of Endangered Species of Flora and Fauna. In Europe, you must have an import license showing a copy of the export CITES so that when the shipment arrives in the country, customs can verify that the shipment is legal and the contents are correct.   If not, the shipment will be stopped and not delivered, i.e., confiscated.  This is to stop illegally imported products.  There has previously been a significant problem with illegal importation.   And there have been significant funds that have been evaded from taxation, as well as products listed on the red list at risk of extinction.

In Norway, it is the Norwegian Environment Agency in Trondheim that holds the knowledge about CITES.

Genuine handmade products have a high price precisely because of the craftsmanship and the quality of the material, while some fashion producers charge 10 times as much and use inexpensive - easily recognizable symbols, which is of course tempting.   Many customers want to show that they have the means to bask in the spotlight – but perhaps that says more about insecurity regarding their own individual style. 

Finding one's own style with high quality and craftsmanship is probably more   for those who are confident in themselves – those who are meant to understand your style – they see and they know, and that is enough.
